Testimonials and referrals are powerful tools that can significantly impact your business. In this blog post, we'll explore the best way to extract powerful testimonials from your clients that will resonate with more if your ideal clients, how to ask your clients for referrals, and how to use these tools effectively to grow your client base and ultimately your business.

The Power of Testimonials

1. Authenticity Is Key

Testimonials are essentially endorsements from your previous clients. They serve as social proof, reassuring potential clients that they can trust your services. To make testimonials effective, they must be authentic and genuine. Encourage your clients to provide honest feedback about their experience working with you, and don't be afraid to showcase both positive and constructive feedback. Authenticity builds trust, and trust is essential in a client-photographer relationship. Including a photo of the client also helps to create authenticity so people know it's not a fake testimonial that could have been written by anybody!

TIP: Don't be afraid to post screenshots of client reviews from Google, Facebook, Instagram, Trustpilot or any other review platform you might use. They might not look particularly pretty but people can instantly see they're genuine when they're actual screenshots.

TIP: Make sure you thank clients for leaving a review

2. Showcase Your Expertise

Testimonials are an opportunity to highlight the specific aspects of your service that clients appreciate the most. When you receive a testimonial praising your ability to make clients feel comfortable during a shoot or your skill in capturing their personalities or nuances, share it prominently on your website or social media. These testimonials can emphasise your strengths as a photographer and help potential clients see what sets you apart. It also allows potential clients to visualise the transformative power of working with you when they choose you as their photographer.

3. Use Visuals
Photography is a visual medium, so why not make your testimonials visually appealing? Consider pairing your testimonials with images from the sessions mentioned in the feedback. This not only adds a personal touch but also shows potential clients the quality of your work. Visual testimonials can be more engaging and convincing than text alone.

PRO TIP: If you want to add an extra level of impact to your testimonials, consider using video. You could ask your client to record a short video at the end of their photoshoot while they're still "camera ready" and feeling super confident and comfortable. Ask them how the experience made them feel and the transformative effect it had on them. They'll be so "in the moment", you're bound to get a fabulous response. You can then put together a powerful video including their video testimonial, and photos from their session. You could also use it for the next thing we're going to talk about – referrals.

Nurturing Referrals

1. Deliver Exceptional Service
The foundation of generating referrals is providing an exceptional photography experience. Exceptional means going beyond what was expected by the client. When clients are thrilled with your work, your professionalism, and how you made them feel throughout the entire process, they are more likely to recommend you to their friends and family. Always strive to exceed your clients' expectations, and they will become your biggest advocates.

2. Ask for Referrals
Don't be shy about asking your satisfied clients for referrals. After delivering their photos, kindly express your appreciation for their business and mention that referrals are a significant part of your growth strategy. You'll be surprised at how often clients are willing to refer you when asked. If you're using the PRO TIP above with the video testimonial, send the video to your client and encourage them to share it.

3. Implement a Referral Program

Consider implementing a referral program where you reward clients who refer new business to you. This can be a discount on their next session, a free print, or another valuable incentive. A referral program can motivate your existing clients to actively promote your services.

How To Use Your Testimonials

1. On Your Website
Ensure your website has a dedicated space for your testimonials so potential clients can easily access feedback from previous clients. Organise the testimonials by category or type of session (e.g., family portraits, headshots) to make it more relevant for visitors. If you have specific pages for services you offer, ensure you only show testimonials that are relevant to that service. i.e. don't show testimonials from your headshot clients on your family photography page.

2. Share on Social Media
Regularly share testimonials and referral stories on your social media platforms. Highlight the positive experiences of your clients and transformation they achieved in working with you. Consistent sharing keeps your audience engaged and reinforces your credibility, builds trust, and allows people to form a connection with you.

🌟PRO TIP: Save time by creating a spreadsheet of your client testimonials and then use Canva's Bulk Create Tool to create your testimonial graphics in batches. You can then schedule out a month's worth in just a few minutes. 👉 Click here to see my step by step video on how to do it.

3. Include in Marketing Materials
Incorporate testimonials and referral quotes into your marketing materials, such as brochures, business cards, and email signatures. These endorsements serve as powerful marketing tools when potential clients first come into contact with your brand.

🌟PRO TIP: If you have a Quantum Business Card, add a custom button for Testimonials that links to a testimonial page on your website so people can get instant social proof and start building trust early in the relationship. Click here to find out more about the Quantum Business Card
